Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Set to Kickoff

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is not just any ordinary event—it's the world's largest rodeo and livestock exhibition, offering a unique blend of entertainment, education, and agriculture. Last year over 2.5 million people attended the various events. Let's dive into the rich history and exciting events that make this festival a must-visit for families.

How did it all begin?

Back in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show started as the Houston Fat Stock Show, with a focus on showcasing the finest livestock in the region. Over the years, it has evolved into a massive event that promotes agriculture, education, and entertainment, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo offers a diverse range of events to cater to every interest:

Rodeo:

Experience the thrill of bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and more at the exciting rodeo competitions. Watch as skilled cowboys and cowgirls showcase their talents in a series of adrenaline-pumping events. Additionally, in 1942 the rodeo began sponsoring a calf scramble. Youth from around the state compete to catch a calf and earn a scramble certificate. This certificate is used to purchase and registered beef heifer or steer that will be showed at the Livestock Show the following year.

Livestock Show:

From junior shows to open shows and youth shows, the livestock exhibitions at the event are a great way to learn about different breeds of animals and the importance of agriculture. It's a fantastic opportunity for kids and adults alike to get up close and personal with farm animals.

Carnival:

The carnival at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a paradise for thrill-seekers and fun-lovers. With a wide variety of rides, games, shopping stalls, and a dedicated kids' section, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Barbecue Cook-offs:

Known for its world-famous barbecue competitions, the event attracts some of the best pitmasters in the country. Visitors can sample mouth-watering barbecue dishes and witness the fierce competition among the participants.

Wine-Tasting Competitions:

For wine enthusiasts, the wine-tasting competitions at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo are a treat for the senses. Discover new flavors, learn about different grape varieties, and indulge in a sophisticated tasting experience.

Trail Rides:

One of the unique aspects of the event is the trail rides, where participants embark on horseback journeys that last for days or even weeks and end in Houston. The rides culminate in a grand parade, showcasing the beauty and camaraderie of the equestrian community. The parade began as part of the festivities in 1938.

With a rich history, diverse events, and a commitment to supporting Texas youth and education through generous donations, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a celebration of tradition, culture, and community spirit. Don't miss out on this unforgettable experience! This year's events begin on March 4th and run through March 23rd.
